Aberfeldy Trout Fishing

Trout Fishing Lochs near Aberfeldy in Scotland

Aberfeldy, an attractive small market town in Perthshire with a population of around 2000, is situated on the banks of the upper River Tay in the central Scottish Highlands. While therefore being ideally located as a base for the salmon angler, it also has much to offer the trout fishermen, whether for the wonderful river trout fishing on the main river Tay or on its trubitaries Tummel and Lyon, which enters the river Tay just a few miles below Kenmore at the eastern end of Loch Tay, on Loch Tay itself (the sixth largest in Scotland at 23km in length) or on the smaller hill lochs scattered around the impressive mountains which rise on all sides.

The map below, an extract from the Bartholomew half-inch map series of last century, shows the location of the rivers and lochs, some easily accessible, others requiring a bit of a walk into the hills. Permits are available for most of the fishing, whether from local angling clubs or local estates. A good place to start your enquiries would be at the local post office or hotels.

The maps on this website, extracts from the “Half Inch” Bartholomew map series of the mid twentieth century, have been reproduced with the permission of Collins BartholomewViewers should note that these maps date back several decades, to the mid twentieth century in fact. While much of the man-made details such as roads and buildings will have changed over the years, the character of the hills, lochs and rivers, and the trout inhabiting them, will have remained very much the same as they have always been, in the more remote regions at any rate! This website shows detailed maps of the major fishing locations. In addition, however, I would recommend that anglers planning a Scottish fishing or walking trip should be sure to equip themselves with a compass, the appropriate local Ordnance Survey map and a working knowledge of how to use them. The most useful of the O.S. maps for the fisherman is the Landranger series, scale 1:50,000. For Aberfeldy, see O.S. map number 52.
